Memorial Weekend in the Ruby Mountains

A month or so ago, Ian and I thought it would be a blast to gather our friends and go camping over memorial day weekend...but pretty much everywhere with running water was booked in the state of Utah. We decided to head to Nevada and camp at the Thomas Canyon campground in the Ruby Mountains. We arrived late Friday night, set up camp, and slept...if you could call it that.

Saturday, we awoke and saw a beautiful mountain range with glacier run off creeks, springs, and waterfalls all around us! It was amazing! We set off on the hike out of the campsite and saw beaver dams and trees wishing it was warmer so they could start blooming. At the end, we found a basin surrounded by ice, snow, and more waterfalls and decided it was a decent place to eat lunch. We trekked back down, with the boys exploring the water and dams with excitement that five year olds have their first time camping. We then played some card games, took a nap, built the warmest fire ever and had delicious tin foil dinners and s'mores! My stomach went to bed happy Saturday night!

Sunday we ventured up Lamoille Canyon to find some more hikes. We got on a trail and 10 minutes in, had lost the trail due to ice and snow. We kept wandering, and wandered for about an hour and a half until we found a switchback trail across the basin. Once on the trail, it was smooth sailing until about 1/4 of a mile was covered in snow. I decided it was best for my attitude and my freezing wet feet for me to turn around and meet one of our friends who had already turned around at the car, and the boys continued to the end to see a very frozen lake. Afterwards, we ate lunch and treated ourselves to a long, relaxing nap and some spicy taco soup!

we hiked through that, around it, and next to it. haha

Monday, we packed up early, and took a less common way back to Logan, in order to find Devil's Playground on the west side of the Great Salt Lake and salt flats. After giving up hope, we found a sign for it, and explored the area. We saw some jackrabbits and Angie saw a snake. We explored the super neat rock formations and definitely recommend it as a place to visit!
